“I want to get a MACUL

grant, what can I do? I feel like I need to up my game.”

This question is from a

high school Spanish teacher who uses iPods, video tape, clickers, distance learning, downloaded web videos, uses Moodle, video tapes

her students’ presentations, monitors their progress

online via recorded webcam and audio tracks, and still

has time to cook with them in class. Roxanne Stanek, our Roxi, has also pro-

vided English as a Second Language instruction to

students at the University of Mexico in Monterrey,

Mexico, and has published three books.

And she needed a game changer?

Cooking In Spanish and Upping

Your game: How one MACUL grant Was put To Tasty Use

By Jim Phipps MACUL Grant Recipient

From a Tech Director’s perspective Roxi is a perfect teacher. She is one of those who uses just enough technology to challenge herself and engage her students, but not so much as to let it run her classroom or frustrate her when something blows up. Also important, she buys the technology she loves with grant money.

“So how about putting all that together?” Looking over Mrs. Stanek’s classroom and curriculum, it didn’t take us long to come up with a game plan. Videotaping cooking shows with students is a great activity and you guessed it, Roxi already does it.

One of the challenges of videotaping groups of students in the classroom is involving the rest of the class which is not actively taping (Goal 1). Another challenge is to involve them in assessing their classmates (Goal 2). My main goal was to increase online activity for students and teacher using the district’s Moodle learning management system.

Following our game plan, we racked up the points and made our three goals. Tally up the scores.

Vocabulary pretests for the unit were administered at the project start. (assessment ding!)

• Roxi created and posted instruction sheets and evaluation rubrics for her students to access on Moodle. (teacher technology ding!) (student activity ding!)

The students wrote Spanish recipes (content ding!) scripts (writing ding!) and provided props and costumes. (motivation/ participation ding!)(ding!)
