Student absenteeism is not something new, and is not likely to change in the near future. As educators we can learn to adapt our teaching styles to include many aspects of technology to help those students when they do miss class. After researching student absenteeism in education, here are some findings and some ways we can use technology to help.

STUDENT ABSENTEEiSM Statistical data from the US Department of Education (2007) in The Condition of Education report, indicates that student absenteeism has remained relatively stable in 4th


and 8th


grade students, but did indicate a slight shift in the in the number of students that are missing more schools days per month. Also Williams (2002) said that that despite mandatory student attendance laws for public K-12 schools, absenteeism still remains a problem for schools. She indicates that the problem is not a just concern for teachers, but also for school administration, parents, and for the students. Even at the University level, Massingham (2006) points out that non- attendance to lectures appears to be a growing trend.


ABSENTEE iDENTiFiCATioN Before we try to find all of the reasons students miss classes and look for a solution, we need to understand that students miss school for a variety of reasons. Some absences are unavoidable, while others, according to Keane (2008), students missed lectures because of the perception that there is little benefit in attending. If they felt it would be useful information toward an assignment, then they would obtain the notes pertaining to the assignment and not go to the lecture. Te lecture itself was the cause for much of the absenteeism. Students had difficulty with the style of the lecturer or the pace of the lecture, this prevented students from attending. Context was pointed out as a major case of absenteeism in two main areas. One area with the greatest
