The MVU® Online Teaching and Learning Mastery (OTLM) program uses the concepts of PBL to offer K-12 teachers the oppor- tunity to use the tools and techniques to teach with and create online activities and entirely online courses. Teachers explore the topics in the course and then make products either individually or collaboratively that they can use in their teaching situation. They also often peer review each other’s work using rubrics so that they are creating high quality products that have a great chance of being effective.


This program is hands-on and practical, resulting in skills in online teaching design and implementation as well as products for imme- diate use. PBL is a way to put students (in this case, teachers), into real-world situations so they can quickly apply what they are learn- ing. It also allows for collaboration with peers.


The OTLM program is built around four key concepts: e-Instructor, e-Students, e-Curriculum and Evaluation/Assessment. The courses spiral around these concepts, so each course takes a more in-depth look at each of these concepts. This is intended to bring about deep learning, where teachers use technology and inquiry to engage with issues and questions that are relevant to their lives.


MVU uses PBL in the pw program because it is important that adult learners see practical applications and have a voice in their learning. It also allows them to make products they can use immediately in their classroom or with staff. Supported by a network of their peers they feel very comfortable showcasing the results of their projects.


This program is aimed at educators looking to create or teach online courses, current classroom teachers making blended materi- als or administrators looking to build blended/online curriculum.


The pilot OTLM program concludes this winter, with plans to launch the second cohort soon afterward. Going forward, the plan

The program lasts a year and is available for both SB-CEUs and graduate credit. It is LMS neutral. The course is offered in Moodle but participants can have access to any LMS or none at all. It is offered in a cohort format so teachers move through the program with the same group of teachers; how- ever, they may select the course(s) that best meet their needs.
