EXECUTIVE NOTES By Rich Bender, Executive Director
HIGHLIGHTS OF RECENT ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS WITHIN USA WRESTLING The sport of wrestling in the United States continues to grow
and evolve in so many ways. There is so much going on in wrestling, and within the USA Wrestling organization, that it is sometimes a challenge to keep up. I would like to point out a few encouraging news items from recent weeks that our mem- bers should be aware of.
California USA Wrestling helping save college programs -
We would like to praise California USA Wrestling, our state association in the Golden State, for its leadership in helping pre- serve college wrestling programs. Earlier this year, California USA Wrestling’s board approved a $20,000 grant to help sup- port college wrestling in the state. Most recently, the organiza- tion has teamed up with the National Wrestling Coaches Association to present the NWCA All-Star Classic in Fresno, Calif. on November 21. Proceeds from this popular event will be used in the effort to preserve and protect California college pro- grams. There are severe financial problems within education in California, and the wrestling community is stepping up to ensure that future generations of California wrestlers have the opportu- nity to compete in college in their home state.
Strong start to the new membership year - We are pleased
to report that USA Wrestling had its best September ever in terms of signing up members. In addition, one of our featured national folkstyle events, the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, sold out completely with more than 1,500 entries. We understand that as more people join USA Wrestling, it is our duty to provide better programs and services for these members and their families.
USAWrestling.org website developed - This fall, in an effort
to better inform and educate our members about USA Wrestling, a new website has been launched entitled
USAWrestling.org. You will find many informational sections,
including membership, athletes, coaches, officials, clubs, Team USA, events, news, financials and more. Information on the USA Wrestling National Staff, Board of Directors, Board Committees and state associations is easily accessible.
USA Wrestler digital edition - All member families of USA Wrestling receive our official magazine USA Wrestler in their homes. Starting with our last edition, we have also developed a digital edition of USA Wrestler, where people can view this pub- lication online. We are providing this for members who would like to receive this information in a digital format. However, we are also offering this to the entire wrestling community, making it easier for new people to learn about USA Wrestling, its athletes and its programs. We believe that this will help promote the sport better and build more interest within the general public. Share the digital edition with those you know in wrestling.
New leadership opportunities - USA Wrestling was excited
to learn that the international wrestling federation FILA has appointed Stan Dziedzic of the United States as one of its Vice Presidents. Stan has served on the FILA Bureau with distinction since 2006. In his new position, Stan will have additional influ- ence within international wrestling. It is his goal to better repre- sent the interests of the wrestling community from the Western Hemisphere. We know he will serve the wrestling community very well in his new role. Also this fall, I was elected by my peers within the Olympic movement to serve as the chair of the National Governing Body Council. I am humbled by this honor. We are committed to help- ing NGBs to improve their operations and serve as a voice with- in the U.S. Olympic Committee. I look forward to this new chal- lenge as we work to improve the U.S. Olympic movement. The NGBs have a collective membership of 13 million and
host over 60,000 events annually. The NGBs are the 365-day arm of the U.S. Olympic move-
