The summer before his senior year in high school, Wiley Dawson spent eight weeks at Eastern in a program for future teachers. He earned a 4.0 and realized he had the ability to succeed in college. “I’m the first in my family to attend a four-year college,” he says. “Becoming a teacher is one way for me to be a mentor and help break the pattern of poverty for kids growing up in neighborhoods like mine.” WILEY DAWSON, history and education major; 2010–11 student government president
