FROM THE TAILGATE
Sage advice from the trenches

Choosing Abundance
For the third consecutive year we proudly present the Green Builder Home of the Year Awards in this, our December issue. And once again we are delighted with the stunning array of award-winning projects, especially in a year that has been widely regarded as the toughest the industry has faced since the Great Depression.
What is particularly satisfying for me personally is the validation that comes with knowing there are still plenty of talented, dedicated, and determined professionals in this industry who continue to produce truly remarkable projects. There is just something about adversity that pushes the cream to the top of the pail.
Over the decades I have seen several market cycles come and go, and with every one of them came the realization that there are those who excel regardless of how tough the sledding gets, those who refuse to participate in the negativity, those who always choose to operate from a platform of abundance.
Great builders have to believe that if there is only going to be one project built in their market at any given time, that the project will be theirs! To accept any other option is unthinkable, and the builders and other building industry professionals featured in this issue epitomize that spirit of confi dence.
At Green Builder we salute them! While other publishers in the building sector seem unable to rise above the quagmire of doom and gloom that pervades many segments of the industry, focusing endlessly on the failures, the dire predictions, and the long-gone “good old days,” we prefer to celebrate the victories, the shared exuberance of great projects, and the knowledge that our best days, like those of the people we feature, are yet to come.
2011 will be the sweetest year yet for us and for the men and women who continue to prove every day that you can’t allow yourself to fall captive to the scarcity of spirit that so many are unable to escape.
Like us, they will make the most of every opportunity that comes their way, seeing each and every project as a potential award winner, and more important, as proof that they cannot be defeated by conditions and circumstances beyond their control.
We will do our part by continuing to lead the way to a brighter, more sustainable future for the industry and for those we all serve, by providing accurate, balanced, positive information and inspiration in every single issue of the magazine we produce.
Look to us for innovative and creative ways to provide the resources that will keep you and your projects on track for success in the new economy, the new building industry, and the new abundance that is waiting to be shared by those who still dare to dream big. I can’t wait!
