Virtually any design vernacular can be executed sustainably—from ultra modern to adobe, from urban chic to Florida flat roof. Every one of these outstanding homes boasts stellar green credentials.
No one wants to live in a bunker, no matter how energy efficient and resource friendly. Research has shown that the built environment—and its proximity to or detachment from nature—has a profound effect on human psychology. From the qualities of light to ventilation to doorway and window placement, each design choice changes how we interact with a space, how long we may live there, perhaps even our relationships with others in that space. This month’s award-winning homes demonstrate a sensitivity to that human element. Without exception, they pay attention not just to good building science, but also to how people will live in the house.
