lies the Historic Hudson Valley, famous for sites such as The Vanderbilt Mansion and Springwood, the home of Franklin Roosevelt. The Catskills Region boasts
four dozen golf courses, many wineries, and lots of outdoor activities, soft adventure and excellent skiing in winter. North of the Capital, Saratoga Region is rich in culture and heritage, while the Adirondacks, home to the Olympic Village of Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain have many more year-round outdoor activities and
opportunities to connect with nature. The Thousand Islands-Seaway region
has great fishing, beautiful waterside campsites and the 454-mile-long scenic Seaway Trail. Crystal-clear lakes, unspoilt forests, waterfalls and fertile valleys all help make up the Fingerlakes, the USA's second biggest wine-producing area. The spectacle of Niagara Falls, one of
the seven natural wonders of the world is truly awe inspiring.
STATE SECRET... New York State is home to the 2nd largest State Park in the US. Adirondack State Park covers no less than six million acres, and is home to 46 mountains and 3,200km of hiking trails.
DON'T MISS... Fall in New York State. One of the best times to visit is mid-Sept to mid-Nov. Leaves change to bright crimsons, golds and oranges, and the forests and rugged mountain wilderness transforms into a dazzling spectacle, just as impressive as neighbouring New England.
The Maid of the Mist by the Niagara Falls
For 2011 there are even more reasons to visit the unbelievable Land of Enchantment:
its rich and slightly unusual variety of activities, attractions and events. Choose from visiting the Rio Grande or cultural Santa Fe, one of the oldest cities in the USA, or take part in the great chilli debate, ‘Red, Green or Christmas’, to name just a few.
• Scenic Byways – New Mexico offers some of the most iconic roads in the United States with a range of fly drive options – take the Billy the Kid Scenic Byway or how about Route 66?
• Space Travel – the groundbreaking has already taken place for the world’s first Spaceport, and the introduction of Virgin Galactic flights into Space from New Mexico will begin in 2010 or 2011
STATE SECRET... Roswell, location of the infamous UFO incident in 1947, is in New Mexico. Today the city has a museum devoted to the event and the controversy surrounding it, and there is a Roswell UFO Festival held in July every year.
DON'T MISS... The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta – the largest hot air balloon festival in the world. The spectacular nine-day event takes place in October every year in the 200-acre Balloon Fiesta Park.
