industry, we can offer the best service in the industry,” said Munden-Price. “Every member of our staff is a graduate of our in-house training programme and everyone gets additional training on-site for every contract they work on.” OCS uses an appraisal process focused on individual career
development completed with line management six monthly, together with monthly work record reviews which help keep staff informed of their progress and development. OCS is also very proud of its rate of staff retention. “We know how good our staff are and we work hard to keep them,” concluded
Diana Munden-Price. “We’ve achieved a 90% cleaner retention rate. We have a highly committed staff and that shows in the level of service we’re able to guarantee our customers.” OCS is a family business, which has grown to become a global company with a £715 million turnover and more than 61,000
employees. It also won the overall prize in the 2009 Golden Service Awards. Kimberly-Clark
Professional’s Graham Landi said: “Winning the Site Supervisor of the Year category is a great accolade for OCS and shows what a great people-focused business it is in a people- focused industry.”
Professional and CSSA Golden Service Awards
Cleaning is a people busi- ness. It’s about working with people, motivating them and getting the best out of them. It’s about helping people to perform to high standards, day in, day out. It’s about the right leadership and encour- agement to get people to do the right job, every time. That’s why the site supervisor of the year in the 2009 Kimberly-Clark Professional and CSSA Golden Service Awards has to be a special person. Marek Makowski, site supervisor for OCS at Eli Lilly’s Erl Wood Manor site, is a top team leader.
“Getting the team right is absolutely vital to doing a good job,” said Diana Munden-Price, regional operations director, OCS Business and Industry South & East Region. “And having the right supervisor in place is absolutely vital to getting the team right. Marek is a very special person. He very much
deserves this honour. He’s always willing to put in that extra effort.”
That meant, for example, getting in when the site was affected by snow earlier this year and making sure it opened fully without any hitches. He did the same when the site was hit by flooding, which created a huge clear up job.
Colleagues describe him as loyal and very good at handling the pressure which is an inherent part of such a big job. It helps that he’s got a good sense of humour. “Job satisfaction for cleaning staff depends on the atmosphere in the team,” continued Munden-Price. “Having a supervisor like Marek, who understands that people want to enjoy working together, helps us to motivate and retain staff. Marek’s a great
communicator which is a very important ability for
someone who has to act as the channel for information passing from the client to our cleaning staff. He’s very good at providing the right encouragement for staff, making sure they work to the best of their abilities and that they know exactly what needs to be done. He’s also very good at making sure that they know that a good job is valued.”
He’s also highly trained. “We do believe very strongly in making sure every one of our staff has the best training for the job and Marek is a good example,” said Diana Munden-Price. “He’s taken full advantage of the available in-house training to make sure he has all the skills he needs. He’s well up on cleaning technology and practice and on health and safety issues. And, above all, he takes pride in the job and shows a great sense of achievement in doing it well.”
Marek Makowski is part of the OCS housekeeping team contracted by SPIE Matthew Hall for Eli Lilly at the Erl Wood Manor site. OCS carries out a comprehensive range of housekeeping services, including the cleaning of offices, washrooms, carpets, upholstery and also laboratories on request. Other tasks include the stripping and sealing of floor surfaces, pressure washing, and waste removal.
The contract at Erl Wood was renewed in March 2008 for three years. “Marek’s work played an important part in making sure the contract was renewed,” says Diana. “We had the right team, providing the right service. The client didn’t want to change.” OCS prides itself on
having highly trained, career oriented, motivated staff. “With the best staff in the
