The BICSc David Bellamy Award has been running since 2000 and, for the Institute's anniversary year, it has been decided to revamp the award and focus on the requirements in The National Framework for Sustainable Schools. As a cleaning institute it is important that the working relationship between the cleaning team and the pupils is a focus, in particular that they can work together to minimise their environmental impact. The aim of the award will be to develop an understanding for the school, pupils and cleaning staff of sustainability in the school and its effect on the local environment.

The objectives of the award are mapped against three of the sustainability themes in the National Framework for Sustainable Schools and encompass the Department of Education's belief that schools are guided by a commitment to care - care for oneself, care for each other and care for the environment. At the end of the project, the children and cleaning staff will be able to:

• provide evidence of improvement in minimising their environmental impact during the project.

• provide evidence of the pupils and cleaning staff working together to achieve common goals.

The award is open to all schools with pupils aged between 5 to 16 years and is a joint venture with cleaning staff at the school, the pupils and teachers.

Pupils and cleaning staff will be required to work together to achieve the objectives in the following three sustainability themes:

• energy and water. • purchasing and waste. • travel and traffic.

London event hailed a success

The first event for the relaunched London and Home Counties Region was held at the Brooklands Hotel at the beginning of August. The event was introduced by John Johnson, the region’s chairman. As the hotel is situated next to the famous Brooklands circuit (or what is left of it), the agenda had a motor racing theme. Principal HSE inspector, Frank Sykes, the ‘warm-up lap’, gave a topical

presentation on health and safety for cleaning contractors and the challenges that the industry faces, how they should be tackled, what our

responsibilities are and why we should bother.

commitment to the industry, were seen as professionals and were supporting the BICSc aim to set and improve standards through education and training.

Following a ‘pit stop’ the main event produced a lively and entertaining discussion between ‘Mr Microfibre’ aka Robbie Sutherland from Newell Rubbermaid and ‘Joe Soap’ aka Mike McHardy from Ecolab. The audience got very involved and the two presenters were kept on their toes debating the pros and cons of microfibre versus chemicals.
