Col. Larry Guarino, USAF-Ret. (member since 1975): Guarino chronicled his time at the “Hanoi Hilton” in A POW’s Story: 2,801
Days in Hanoi (Ballantine Books, 1997). His career began in 1943, when he be- came a cadet and earned his wings. He flew 156 combat missions in World War II and with the Flying Tigers before being recalled for Korea and Vietnam.
Col. Gary LaGrange, USA-Ret. (Life Member since 1991): Vietnam veteran (and past president of the Flint Hills MOAA
Chapter and the Kansas Council of Chapters) LaGrange founded Help us Learn … Give us Hope Inc., which has sent more than 500,000 pounds of sup- plies and 540,000 books overseas to aid 350,000 children. LaGrange received President Obama’s 2009 Spirit of Service Award from the Corporation for Na- tional and Community Service as the year’s most outstanding senior volunteer.
Cmdr. James A. Marvin, USN-Ret. (member since 2009): Marvin graduated from basic underwater demolition/SEAL train-
ing in 1991. During his career, he served in Bahrain, Guam, Hawaii, and Nor- folk, Va., and on the fast-attack submarine USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686). In 2009, he retired from his final post at Naval Special Warfare Group 4. He now leads field operations and business development for an alternative en- ergy company and has a consulting practice.
Lt. j.g. Frank Spatuzzi, USCGR-Ret. (member since 1978): This World War II veteran graduated from the Coast Guard Acad-
emy in Connecticut in 1942 and served in the Philippines. He survived a ka- mikaze attack on his ship Dec. 29, 1944, and received a Purple Heart. After his recovery, he retired and started a construction business, settling in Florida, where he is involved with the Armed Forces Military Museum. In 2009, the mu- seum honored Spatuzzi and his wife, Inge, as Lifetime Community Partners.
