Albuquerque W

ith its unique blend of Pueblo, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo history and traditions, Albuquerque, N.M., culture and cuisine are like no other. Check

out fi ve of the area’s most interesting neighborhoods. Old Town: Albuquerque’s fi rst neighborhood (www.albuquerqueoldtown.com)

refl ects its Spanish and Pueblo heritage with adobe buildings, a central plaza, and Albuquerque’s oldest church. Artisans display jewelry and pottery on blankets across from the plaza. Church Street Café, in a 300-year-old hacienda, serves New Mexican food on its patio. Nob Hill: This one-mile stretch (http://rt66central.com) of Route 66

consists of a collection of retro buildings, roadside diners, mod motels, and neon signs. Kelly’s Pub, a sports bar, is housed in a former 1939 Ford dealership and service station, with original gas pumps. Corrales: Watch out for roadrunners and jackrabbits on your way to

Corrales (www.visitcorrales.com), a quiet farming village with hitch- ing posts in front of the market. Sample local wine at Milagro Winery, where the winemaker’s dogs rush to greet you. Then feast on fl at en- chiladas (voted the best in Albuquerque) at Casa Vieja Restaurant. Madrid: Once a thriving community with a population of 4,000,

this rustic stop became a ghost town after its mine closed. Rediscov- ered in the 1970s, today it’s part hippie haven, part artisan community, with pottery shops, galleries, coffeehouses, a (supposedly haunted) mercantile, and the No Pity Café. The Mine Shaft Tavern, built to feed hungry miners, today serves travelers. It adjoins the abandoned mine, with a 1901 locomotive, equipment, a blacksmith shop, and old ve- hicles left from when the mine closed (www.themineshafttavern .com/oldcoalminemuseum.html).
