EDITORIAL 3-D Metalcasting Coming Soon? I

n a recent edition of the Chicago Tribune (yes, I still receive the daily print newspaper at home each morning), two articles in the business sec- tion caught my eye. The first was on Google’s

start-up of a television division. Google believes it is only a few years away from radically chang- ing the home entertainment model by giving consumers the opportunity to have all television programming feed through the internet, allowing users to surf for current and past shows they want to watch. The second article was on

a new brand of 3-D television that delivers a better image at a more economical price (the manufacturer still hasn’t improved the glasses that must be worn). and information we can add to each issue. For example, we have posted the 2010-11 Metalcasting Equipment, Products & Services Supplement you received with your September is- sue in our digital maga- zine reader with video enhancements. I try to envision opportunities for our magazines. A 3-D video of metalcast- ing would allow you to reach out and practically touch molten metal. It also would be an exciting public relations tool to help sell the next genera- tion of metalcasters. The problem is the production technology is available only with the unlimited budgets of Hollywood. But, once it reaches our local electronics store, watch out, molten metal will be pouring in your living room. In terms of Google’s television on demand, MODERN CASTING has taken its first steps to supply- ing this content for metalcasters. Have you visited the digital edition of MODERN CASTING online at www. moderncasting.com? Each month, we republish our issue in an e-magazine reader that allows you to flip pages like you would with a paper version, zoom in and zoom out for close-ups, and even save .pdfs of pages you want to keep. But what makes these digital issues special is the digital-only features

3-D metalcasting yet. And, Google’s on-de- mand television for met- alcasters is still in the early stages. But we are delivering web-only video and audio for you to listen to and watch. While we at MODERN CASTING believe our words help take you to the leading metalcast- ing facilities across the globe, we know the video of these facilities and the voices of their leaders take you that much closer.
