Wanted: young campaigners to go to Bolivia!

A competition has been launched to find the Young Global Education Ambassadors for 2011. The winning teenagers will have the chance to visit Bolivia in February with the charity Toybox and the Global

Students aged 14 and 15 are invited to apply through their school for the 2011 Steve Sinnott Award. This will send two winners, and their teacher, to Bolivia to investigate the barriers to education faced by children living on the streets.

The competition aims to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goal, agreed by world leaders in 2000, to provide all children with a quality primary education by 2015. Despite progress, 72 million children worldwide are still missing out.

The winners will meet Bolivian street children and hear about the educational challenges they face. Young people from Toybox-supported projects will give the UK pupils an insight into their lives. The students will also meet community leaders and politicians to hear about education in Bolivia.

They will spread the word at union conferences and to the media when they return. They will also feature in a film for next year’s Send My Friend to School campaign, organised by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE).

As NUT General Secretary, Steve Sinnott was committed to the GCE, which believes education is the best route out of poverty. After his death in 2008, donations in his memory led to the Steve Sinnott Award being set up.

The closing date is 10 November. For further details contact David Westwood (email: david.westwood@toybox.org), ring 0845 4660010, or visit www.sendmyfriend.org/award.
