for user-selected UPMAX-II upmixing and/or dynamic range control, then a final pass to ensure the results perfectly match the chosen target. This methodology enables complete independence of loudness matching, guaranteeing the target is reached every time, regardless of other processing choices, while preserving the quality of the original content. By using AERO.qc (LCM),

broadcasters will be able to ensure that all their transmissions stay within the guidelines set either by the broadcast entity or the government, while also making sure that the correction has been applied properly. This eliminates the need for the audio to be constantly monitored on each transmission, a difficult task when there is no set time for broadcasts of these types of programming. Upmixing and downmixing capabilities within the RadiantGrid platform help handle the different delivery formats offering audio in stereo and surround. After the mezzanine files have been generated, the audio streams can then be automatically upmixed or downmixed to fit the output transcoding settings. For example, when broadcasters are using GXF files with Dolby E audio,

they can automatically downmix from 5.1 to 2.0, apply dynamic scaling, resample the sample rate, or up/downconvert the bit depth of the audio stream into a target stereo stream for transcoding. By

maintaining the relationships between the master asset and the mezzanine audio (and video) streams in its asset repository, RadiantGrid is able to make intelligent decisions about the audio conversions that happen in the transcoding process.

Along with control over the actual levels, time is also a factor when dealing with file-based workflows. Users require solutions to apply dynamic compression and scaling to their audio content, but in an environment where the speed to process the media can be maximised. In most file-based transcoding workflows, the source video would need to be decoded and re-encoded when transcoding to the customer's preferred audio format. This can cause the transcoding process to be longer than usual. Customers are now starting to request a means to pass-through the video streams without re-encoding, and only process the audio streams. To meet this need, RadiantGrid has incorporated transwrapping

functionality into its transcoding platform. Using transwrapping capabilities, broadcasters are able to pass through video streams of any type, while re-encoding, applying loudness processing such as the Linear Acoustic AERO.qc (LCM), upmixing or downmixing to the audio sources. This also provides users with the flexibility to handle video processing via a hardware device.

It is only a matter of time before the loudness control regulations will be enacted into law across the globe. This, combined with the surge of multimedia distribution formats, compels broadcasters to have a proper plan in place to control loudness across the different formats. RadiantGrid, along with Linear Acoustic, has anticipated this need, adding loudness correction to its transcoding capabilities. Much like the other operations performed by the company’s platform, these corrections are automatic, allowing the audio to be processed without much user intervention. This, combined with the company’s TrueGrid faster-than-real-time transcoding, will allow broadcasters to keep up with the demand while still providing high- quality video and audio regardless of format.
