IPTV@IBC2010 special report

Keeping up-to-date with the latest consumer trends in digital TV is an ongoing challenge for pay-TV service providers, telcos and multiple service operators around the world. From the addition of new content, delivered via traditional broadcast networks or broadband IP networks - or increasingly via a combination of both - to the delivery of advanced interactive services, like video-on-demand, time-shift and access to social networking applications, operators seem to be playing a continual game of catch-up. Gerhard Faltner, explained: “We knew that our subscribers’ media consumption preferences were changing and we wanted to make sure we offered consumers additional functionality as part of their existing aonTV service. We needed a way to enable our subscribers to benefit from new multimedia functionality quickly and cost-effectively, without requiring the replacement of our entire installed hardware base.”

A1 Telekom Austria chose an open- standards solution from one of the established leaders in the development of digital pay-TV platforms - Advanced Digital Broadcast - that could be uploaded onto subscribers existing set-top boxes remotely. This helped increase the speed at which the new ‘Meine Medien’ service could be rolled out
