AFS Research Helps Produce $10.1 Million Grant, Lightweight Solutions With the help of AFS research, a
team led by the Univ. of Wisconsin- Madison (UWM), Madison, Wis., has procured a five-year, $10.1 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The grant is intended to help UWM take cast aluminum and magnesium nano- composites from the laboratory to large-scale production. AFS provided UWM the research funds necessary to initiate the seed project that helped prove the viability of the technology. UWM’s Xiaochun Li developed a
method that combines solidification processes with ultrasonic cavitation- based dispersion of nanoparticles in aluminum and magnesium alloy melts in a project funded by AFS. According to an article in the Spring 2009 (Vol. 3, Issue 2) International Journal of Metalcasting, the need for cast alu- minum and magnesium alloys with elevated temperature capabilities is expected to increase as automotive industries are forced to improve the fuel efficiency of their products. “It could reduce weight by 20% to
30% on an engine block, for example,” said Tom Prucha, AFS vice president of technical services. “If it proves suc- cessful, the research eventually could result in thousands of new jobs in the U.S. metalcasting industry.”

CMI Delivers Introduction to Metalcasting Tutorial CD
New for 2010, the Cast Metals In-
stitute (CMI) has released an updated version of its Introduction to Metal- casting Tutorial CD. Through the use of interaction, video, text and quizzes with printable scores, the user will learn the process of making a metal casting from start to finish. Compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems, the tutorial helps take a new employee from “what’s that?” to “now I know.”
