Thresher Finalizes First Order for New Process, Alloy

Thresher Industries Inc., Hanford, Calif., has completed

the first two purchase orders for parts produced in its new high pressure casting facility using a proprietary alloy. “This represents the first and second production

orders for our high pressure casting facility and the first use of our proprietary, more thermally conduc- tive alloy,” said Tom Flessner, the company’s chief executive officer. “The base alloy for our thermally conductive aluminum is 356.” According to a company press release, Thresher re-

ceived the orders from an S&P 500 company, began pro- duction on them and shipped all the parts by the end of 2009. The two purchase orders were for two parts each. After completing inspection and approval, Thresher has finalized the purchase orders and booked the revenue in the amount of approximately $70,000 for the fourth quarter of 2009. While the company would not disclose the customer name

on the order, Thresher indicated the end use for the parts would be decorative yet functional, with thermal conductivity being the key element. “We have been able to fulfill the customer’s require-

ment with regard to quality, quantity and timeline,” Fless- ner said. “This represents the first step in addressing a need for higher thermal conductivity and better surface finishes, while maintaining cost competitiveness in a global economy.”

3D Systems Invests in More Metalcasting Capability

Rapid prototyping firm 3D Systems Corp., Rock Hill, S.C., announced it acquired the assets of Moeller Design, Seattle, a company that maintains investment casting capabilities, among other competencies. Moeller is the second firm with casting capabilities 3D

Systems has purchased in the past six months. The company purchased Acu-Cast Technologies, Lawrenceburg, Tenn., which manufactures rapid castings, among other prototype solutions, in September 2009. The company said at the time it expected to integrate its own rapid manufacturing centers in Rock Hill, S.C., and Darmstadt, Germany, with the Acu- Cast facilities. A provider of investment casting services and prototyping

for aerospace and medical device manufacturers, Moeller also brings to 3D Systems proprietary urethane cast production facilities in North America. According to a release by 3D Systems, the purchases of

Moeller and Acu-Cast were intended to enhance the com- pany’s vertically integrated system of providing plastic and metal parts tools, patterns and assemblies. “We are proud to add Moeller to [our] growing family of…op-

erations and services,” said Abe Reichental, president and CEO of 3D Systems.
