Interconnection I Product News Molex launches passive safety pole connector

Molex Incorporated has introduced an innovative power quick-disconnect connector designed to meet new EU legislation for roadside lighting and electronic signage. The passive safety pole connector speeds up installation, repair and temporary removal of street furniture. The road safety legislation, stipulates necessary changes in roadside furniture construction and materials to better absorb impact and lessen personal injury of motorists in the event of a crash.

Changes in safety regulations will specifically require that all powered signs, lights and signals include a power quick-disconnect system; standards relative to the product include TA 89/05, BS EN 12767 and BS EN 60309-1&2. In the event of an accident, whereby a vehicle hits roadside equipment, the system must disconnect the electrical supply within 0.4 seconds of impact. Motion sensors and circuit protection devices available on the market do not prevent tearing or tethering of wires on impact with a pole.

Installation of the Molex pole connector is a two-step process. Step one occurs at ground level. The base fixtures of the pole are cemented into the ground. The first cable, fitted with a connector sealed by a water-tight cap, is installed into the ground at the main circuit-protection device. The integrated protective cap remains in place until the connector is mated with the pole side connector, and provides mechanical and

environmental protection for the interface (IP68). The second step is to install the pole and connect the pole cable to the ground cable. A flexible tether attaches the pole over or underground. The connector and cable are pre-assembled when manufactured to protect them fully from external elements, while saving considerable time and money during installation.

In addition to roads, highways and

motorways where power is used, the passive safety pole connector can be used in any application requiring a quick release safety connection. Low extraction forces combined with IP68 sealing and superior electrical and mechanical performance capabilities ensure that the passive safety pole connector is suitable for generators at docks, electric cars, emergency vehicles, as well as for lighting installations.

ITT achieves industry leading EV connector UL approval to 75 amps

Achieving an Electric Vehicle industry first, connector manufacturer and supplier ITT Interconnect Solutions has launched a new high efficiency, high reliability J1772 connector targeting electric vehicle charging applications and capable of performing Level I and II charging from a low end of 15A/120V to a high end range of 75A/240V through the same interface.

Based on HEP spring contact technology, the new connectors represent the industry's first UL-rated, J1772 Level II 75 amp four hour or less full charging solution. Charging options include 75A/240V, 30A/240V, 15A/240V and 15A/120V. The inlet connector includes finger- tip protection on the power and ground pin contacts, and also features an enhanced cable management system using ITT’s VEAM CIR series backshells. By using cable with a greater degree of flexibility, ease-of-use is assured on retractable design charging units. Commenting on the release ITT global marketing director, Keith Teichmann said: “With the release of the SAE J1772 specification in January 2010 as the standard adopted in the USA and Japan for Level I and II electric vehicle charging, robust coupler and inlet connectors capable of passing stringent testing to UL 2251

for agency approval were urgently needed to support electric vehicle production capability currently scheduled for Q4 2010. Our new interconnect is based on a high-power system used on hybrid busses: over 33,000 such interconnects are currently in service without a single known field failure.”

The new UL-approved J1772 Level I and II electric vehicle charging robust coupler and inlet connectors are suitable for electric passenger vehicles, home charging units, public infrastructure charging units, roadside assistance trucks, electric fleet vehicles, and electric motorcycles.

New VEAM Power VIP connector from ITT saves space and assembly time

Global connector manufacturer and supplier ITT Interconnect Solutions has unveiled a new Power VIP connector, currently the only 90 degree interconnect on the market designed to replace fixed insulator power systems and enable current converters on trains to be speedily and easily connected and disconnected.

The VEAM Power VIP has a straight receptacle and right angle plug which is lightweight and offers considerable space saving over conventional interconnects for train current converters, power transmission applications, mobile generators and distribution panels. This new connector meets

the latest safety regulations and incorporates finger protection to guard against the risk of injury or electric shock, while allowing an operative to mate and unmate the connector

quickly.

The VEAM Power VIP connector features a threaded coupling with keyway orientation and is rated up to 700A. ROHS compliant and IP67 water protected, this new interconnect meets standards for low smoke emission as well as I2F2 and UL-94-V0 standards.
