For Rays’ Garza, no hits and one spot in history
this year is the first in franchise history
by Fred Goodall
st. petersburg, fla.— Matt Garza pitched the first no-hitter in Tampa Bay Rays history and the fifth in the major leagues this season in a 5-0 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
Garza faced the minimum 27
batters. He gave up only a sec- ond-inning walk and provided for a team that has been on the wrong end of pitching gems lately. The Rays have been held hit- less three times since last July, including a pair of perfect games that were thrown against them. “It was one of those days
where everything lined up,” Gar- za said. “The defense made great plays. I really can’t say enough about them.” The last time there were at
least five no-hitters in a season was 1991, when Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan threw one of seven in the big leagues that year, ac-
Fifth no-hitter cording to STATS LLC.
Garza, the 2008 AL champi- onship series MVP, rebounded from one of his worst outings of the season. He retired pinch- hitter Ramon Santiago for the fi- nal out on an easy fly ball to right fielder Ben Zobrist, who made a terrific running catch in the third to rob Danny Worth. “That ninth inning,” Garza said, “I kept telling myself, ‘Just finish it, just finish it, just battle, battle. If it’s meant to happen, it’s going to happen.’ ” Garza’s teammates mobbed him near the mound after a performance that left the New York Mets and San Diego Padres as the only big league teams without a no-hit- ter. The Rays began play in 1998 — the Padres in 1969 and the Mets in ‘62. The closest Detroit’s injury-
depleted lineup came to a hit was Worth’s two-out liner in the third, but Zobrist made a leap- ing catch above his head as he retreated toward the wall. Miguel Cabrera hit a hard lin-
er to left leading off the eighth. Carl Crawford barely had to move to make the play. The Tigers were no-hit for the
first time since Randy Johnson shut them down at Seattle on June 2, 1990.
MIKE CARLSON/ASSOCIATED PRESS
“It was one of those days where everything lined up,” Tampa Bay pitcher Matt Garza said.
Garza (11-5) struck out six in
Tampa Bay’s 2,039th game — and on a night when the Rays struggled to generate much of- fense themselves. Matt Joyce’s grand slam with
two outs in the sixth was the first hit off Detroit starter Max Scherzer (7-8). The next batter, Jason Bartlett, singled for the only other hit of the night until Crawford homered in the eighth. The 26-year-old Garza, who tossed a one-hitter at Florida on June 26, 2008, retired Don Kelly on a routine grounder to second base in the ninth and struck out Gerald Laird before getting San- tiago to end it on his 120th pitch before a crowd of 17,009. — Associated Press

John Danks pitched eight solid innings to win his fourth consecutive start for Chicago. Juan Pierre and Alexei Rami-

Blue Jays rout Bergesen, post 9-5 win over Orioles
Wieters homers twice in loss as Baltimore falls to 0-10 vs. Toronto
by Jeff Zrebiec
toronto — When Aaron Hill’s fourth-inning drive slammed into the camera well over the cen- ter-field wall, Baltimore Orioles starter Brad Bergesen pounded his fist into his glove before step- ping back on the Rogers Centre mound and getting a new ball. He’d have to repeat that act again in the fifth inning after Jose Bautista deposited a pitch just below the second deck in left- center field for a three-run ho- mer, and two batters later when Adam Lind’s line drive just got over the wall in right for a solo shot. It’s getting really old both for the Orioles, who are rightfully tired of watching their young starters melt down on a daily ba- sis and for Bergesen, who simply can’t get major league hitters out with the way that he’s pitched this season. In a woeful perform- ance that could lead to his third demotion in little more than three months, Bergesen was
torched for eight runs in five-plus innings and Baltimore was beat- en again by the Toronto Blue Jays, this time, 9-5, in front of an an- nounced 17,422.
Entering the night, the Orioles
were 0-9 this season against the Blue Jays and 0-7 on Mondays, a toxic mix that foretold a long and difficult night. For much of the game, it was every bit as bad as you would imagine as Toronto built an 8-0 by the bottom of the fifth inning before Baltimore (31- 68) made a game of it, mainly be- cause of Matt Wieters. Bergesen’s horrific outing and another loss – the Orioles are 2-9 since the all-star break – marred the best offensive game of Wie- ters’ young career. In his second game since being activated from the disabled list, Wieters hit two home runs, drove in three runs and walked twice. Luke Scott, who was named American League Player of the Week earlier in the day, also continued his tor- rid stretch with a two-run homer. The Orioles, playing without
first baseman Ty Wigginton, who started serving a two-game sus- pension, pounded out 10 hits, in- cluding two by Brian Roberts, but it still wasn’t enough to erase the damage left by Bergesen. — Baltimore Sun
