BOADT REV. LAWRENCE BOADT, CSP
Rev. Lawrence Boadt, a leading Catholic biblical scholar and Paulist priest, died at his residence in Mahwah, NJ, on July 24, 2010. His death was announced by Rev. Mark-David Janus, president of Paulist Press. He stated that Father Boadt, who was 67, passed away after a long battle with cancer.
Lawrence Boadt was a longtime professor of biblical studies at several institutions of learning including Fordham University and the Washington Theological Union, a Roman Catholic school of theology in the nation’s capitol, where he taught for 21 years. In addition, he was a prolific author of scholarly books and articles and popular studies.
His extensive published works included Ezekiel’s Oracles Against Egypt, two volumes of commen- taries on Jeremiah in the Old Testament Message series, a commentary on “Ezekiel” for the New Jerome Biblical Commentary and almost one hun- dred articles and reviews in leading biblical journals such as the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, the Journal of Biblical Literature, and Vetus Testamentum. His most popular work is Reading the Old Testament: An Introduction, published by Paulist Press in 1985. It has been the standard introduction to the Hebrew scriptures in numerous colleges and seminaries in English.
Lawrence Boadt was born in theWestwood section of Los Angeles, CA, and grew up in the Paulist parish there. He entered the Paulists in 1962 and studied at St. Paul’s College in Washington, DC. Following his ordination in 1969, he did graduate work at Catholic University, obtaining degrees in Semitic languages and theology. From1972–76 he was a student at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, where he obtained a licentiate and doctorate in sacred scripture.
Father Boadt was a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm for whom the classroom and writing were only a part of his achievements. He often conducted tours of the Holy Land. His favorite tour was through Turkey and Greece in the footsteps of St. Paul. He was the biblical expert on the team
established by Walter Burghardt, SJ, which reg- ularly ran workshops/retreats on preaching for diocesan priests. His incredible gift of clarity in his biblical presentations won him numerous admirers. For all the years he lived in Washington, he taught a weekly Bible class to a group of laity, professional people, and government officials.
In 1998 he was named president of Paulist Press and served in that post until his final illness. Since 1975 he had been the scripture editor of the Press. As president, he oversaw publication of up to 80 books a year. Once again he brought out numbers of quality books on the Bible. His final contribution was the highly acclaimed Catholic edition of a Lectio Divina Bible.
Father Boadt served as president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and was active in major Catholic and Protestant biblical organiza- tions. He was president of the Stimulus Founda- tion in recent years which was created to foster dialogue and mutual respect between Christians and Jews through publications dedicated to those goals.
“Larry,” as he was affectionately known by his many friends, was a convivial person who enjoyed being with people. He was never a reclusive scholar but always available for a good time. His unusual work ethic never excluded time with his Paulist brethren, among whom he was extremely popular. Plans are under way to create a fitting memorial to this highly gifted and dedicated priest who did so much to bring people across the U.S. to a deeper understanding of God’s word as it comes to us in the Bible.
A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, 60th Street and Columbus Avenue in New York City. Visitation and wake will take place at the church from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27. Immediately following the funeral, interment will take place in the Paulist Fathers’ section of St. Thomas the Apostle Church Cemetery in Oak Ridge, NJ.
