From hurleys to briquettes

Torpey Wood Products, set up by John Torpey in 1981, is manufacturing wood briquettes using by-products from its existing hurley-manufacturing business. Torpey Wood Products manufactures between 50,000 and

70,000 hurleys a year. It has recently started manufacturing rounder bats and will be the sole supplier to the Rounders Association of Ireland. Themain aims of the briquettes project are to produce a supply

of eco-fuel from the waste produce of hurley and flooring manufacturing and to also supply the Irish market with a simple eco-fuel that has no additives whatsoever. “We were generating an enormous amount of ash waste, 500

tonnes at any given time, which is great quality. The briquettes have been going very well, and we’re putting in more equipment now to shred down the shavings evenmore,” saidTorpey.
