regarding provision of Racing UK pictures, observing: “I’m no legal expert but I fi nd it surprising that, for example, Racing UK can sell their product to the pub down the road but they can’t sell it to me. I fi nd that amazing from a legal point of view, but I fi nd it even more morally and ethically incorrect. Why can’t I buy their service to show the public, just like the pub down the road can?” He also expresses concern about the need to create an environment for encouraging newcomers into the business. “That’s what the industry has got

everything that little bit faster and that little bit harder.”
He is also fulsome in his praise for Super Soccer, who supply Camelford Racing’s early prices. “I have to say I’m nothing but pleased with their service. They’ve certainly been good to me,” he says.
to realize,” he emphasizes. “Just as in horse racing where you’ve got to have apprentice jockeys coming through, so the stuffed shirts shouldn’t be just trying to maintain the status of their fellow stuffed shirts. They need to be looking at what’s best for the industry and encouraging the new blood coming in as best they can. “I think the Association of British Bookmakers, which we’re going to be joining, need to look at that. In the industry where I came from I had some involvement in bulk purchasing agreements. Surely the ABB should be forming a loose coalition so that everybody who signs up to them can buy the service from SIS at an acceptable price.” Three months on from their opening day, the free trial of SIS+ was drawing

He does, though, harbour a grievance
to an end, and while pleased with the service, Richard doubted that they would be continuing with it in the immediate future. “It’s not through quality reasons that
we’re not taking SIS+,” he insists. “It’s just that in the fi rst year of business we’ve still got to be very careful about our cost control. We’re still in the process of building a normal horse racing betting trade. Once that’s established then I can look towards building the trade up, but at the moment we’re not quite there from a business point of view. It’s been great to look at the quality of SIS+ and in another 12 months we’ll probably have it back. “I don’t think an independent could open without the funds that come from the machines. It will hopefully keep us ticking over while giving us 12 months to build our betting trade.” Meanwhile, an application for TurfTV has been submitted and Richard is adopting a positive stance for Camelford Racing and his own change of lifestyle. He knew it would be challenging but has relished the chance to get involved. “I’ve always wanted to be a bookmaker,”
he says, “and, when I die, nobody can say that I didn’t try. There’s no point in dying wondering, so why not give it a go? If in 15 years time I’m stacking shelves in the Co-Op, no problem because I stacked shelves in similar places years ago.”■
