BGRF urges levy
support
FORMER LADBROKES MAN Steve Clare has been working as special consultant to the British Greyhound Racing Fund with the remit of getting support from bookmakers who do not yet pay the voluntary greyhound levy. Says Steve: “When I was
invited to help the BGRF a couple of years back, I thought I had my work cut out. In fact I was pleasantly surprised to find most bookmakers fully understand what the BGRF is about and why they should be on board – it’s just a question of encouraging them to take that final step forward.Notable successes in recent years include Corbetts and the Jennings/ Betterbet Group, amongst others. “We’re well aware of the dif- ficulties bookmakers, especially the smaller operators, face due to increased costs and increased regulation. But greyhound racing still accounts for up to 20 per cent of OTC betting
turnover, a good reason why all bookmakers should support the BGRF. The contribution rate is 0.6 per cent of greyhound turnover and BGRF asks for no more and no less. They’re sup- ported by all major LBO-based bookmakers and many smaller to medium sized concerns, as well as Betfair, spread betting firms and online operators.” BGRF works closely with

The main areas of grant support (last year a total of £12m) are racing integrity: drugs testing, research and regulation of the sport; greyhound welfare, marketing and facilities, prize money, training, data management and IT development. If you’re a bookmaker and
you still haven’t taken a step forward, now’s the time to do so.
