Green data centre

A data centre designed and built by Keysource for oil exploration surveyor Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) has achieved an annualised PUE of just 1.17, making it one of the most energy- efficient facilities of its kind in Europe. As a result, the data centre has achieved first year savings of £650,000 and a 6.7 million KWh drop in power consumption, equating to a 2.9 million kg reduction in

Hygiene message on the air

Hygiene Cleaning Supplies Ltd in Morecambe, one of Jangro’s 37 branches across the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man; has for the third time used local radio to promote the importance of hygiene in the workplace, its next day service and the huge Jangro product range. Local radio station The Bay, brought top Radio presenter Tony “Cooky“ Cookson and the morning show team to the Jangro Member’s premises to broadcast live from10-2pm. An audience of around 40,000 heard the Jangro hygiene and cleaning messages from interviews and discussions with a range of its suppliers. Marcus Leeming, general manager at

Hygiene Cleaning Supplies and representatives from Metsa Tissue, Numatic and Jangro manufacturers all made guest interviews on the programme. The main feature was the Jangro Enviro range of cleaning products

including phosphate-free Laundry powders Jangro customers from all over Cumbria and Lancashire were invited to the event, which was part of the Company’s annual open day. Marcus Leeming commented: “Having

selected products on their quality, our customers’ major concerns were environmental issues and ‘cost in use’. Manufacturers answered customers’ questions and gave some demonstrations. We’ve received calls from customers in a 70-mile radius who heard the show. It was a very effective promotion and we have already booked a repeat for 2011.”

The merits of outsourcing in healthcare

Generating Solutions Group (GSG), has proved that the merits of outsourcing allow flexibility and partnership with two major healthcare contracts. Working with Alliance Medical and Vanguard

Healthcare has enabled the organisation to offer a complete FM solution to the healthcare industry. Now in it’s third year, GSG has built a national presence and is now looking to develop within Europe. The contract with Alliance Medical involves support and maintenance for all of its 45 hospital sites within the UK. GSG’s full asset management provision builds on the air conditioning and electrical services provided and increased responsibility at the healthcare provider. The Vanguard Healthcare contract involves GSG managing the entire engineering and FM side to the business and Vanguard’s 36 relocatable medical units. “When it comes to offering an integrated facilities management service, we have not previously been able to compete with dedicated FM providers,” said Vanguard’s CEO Ian Gillespie. “In this partnership, we

will be able to tap into GSG’s unrivalled FM knowledge and industry expertise.” Duncan Jones, MD of GSG, explained, “Adding value

to our clients, is now of paramount importance as business’ look to outsource and look for synergy. By being diverse in our skills sets, has helped us become flexible and focus on working in partnership with our clients.” “As we adapt to a changed world, we all have to

work smarter, control costs and be transparent in everything we do. By offering a total FM solution has helped to position us as a company who work collaboratively with our clients, so we get to know them better. It’s a simple premise, but one that moves with the times,” Duncan added. The two new contract wins coincide with GSG’s

move to new premises and building the internal admin support and external engineering teams. Tel: 08452 000666 Email: info@thegsgroup.co.uk Web: www.thegsgroup.co.uk

CO2 emissions. The data centre uses Keysource’s Ecofris scalable cooling solution, a free cooling system that does not require the use of additional chillers until outside temperatures reach 24 degrees Celsius. This means that additional power for cooling is only needed for between 80 and 100 hours each year because the system is able to make the most of low UK ambient temperatures in combination with adiabatic cooling. PGS was the first organisation to adopt

this Ecofris solution with the completion of the first phase of a data centre installation last year at the company’s head office in Weybridge, Surrey. The annualised PUE of 1.17 outperforms the design expectation of 1.2 and has been achieved as a result of a ‘fine tuning’ process and advanced performance monitoring. A second phase of development is scheduled to commence later this year designed to increase the IT load to 1.8MW without impacting on levels of efficiency or availability during the installation process. Mike Turff, global data centre manager

at PGS commented: “We are committed to reducing energy, so we needed to develop a data centre that broke the mould using proven technology to provide a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible means of storing vital data. We are thrilled by what has been achieved so far and the recognition it has received, and we will continue to work with Keysource to keep the facility at the forefront of the data centre industry.” Mike West, managing director of

Keysource said: “We went back to the drawing board to develop a data centre that was energy efficient, cost effective and supported today’s high-density hardware. Our aim was to significantly reduce the power required for cooling while ensuring high levels of resilience, predictability and performance that would deliver unrivalled benefits to PGS.” In the past 12 months the PGS facility

has scooped a host of industry awards including a Data Centre Leaders Award, Information Age Award and UK IT Industry Award. Web: www.keysource.co.uk
