COUNTRYPROFILE

first mounting phase of this system has been finished and related tests and examinations are nearing completion.

The Discovery and Potential Testing Group are investigating and studying the consequences of excavation of exploratory wells in Sabalan region to develop access to the potential of reservoir. With revision and applied analysis of geological, geophysical and geochemical information in the Damavand region the group has determined the potential of the exploratory projects and defining the best course of future action.

potential solutions. In 1995, after investigating existing studies and opportunities, one area that has been explored is geothermal energy with the development of PowerStation of Meshkinshahr, which was started by Energy Assistance of Power Ministry of Iran. Exploratory work on this project has continued in the form of a discovery phase consisting of geophysical, geochemical and geological studies. This work has been done in cooperation with New Zealand consulting engineers KML.

The goal of this project is once again to construct a power station from the research. This would be the first geothermal PowerStation in Iran. The group identified the exploratory digging points back in 1999. The excavation process of the first geothermal exploratory well was begun in 2002 by excavation contractors (Iranian Excavation Company) under supervision of experts from New Zealand company, SKM. In April 1999, excavation of this well was completed in vertical form and with a depth of 3200 meters and temperature amounting to 250 degrees centigrade. Second exploratory well was dug in deviational form with depth of 3177 meters which the temperature of the end well was 140 degrees centigrade .Later, the third exploratory well was dug in deviational form with depth of 2265 meters with temperature of 211degrees centigrade.

One of the important functions of the Non- PowerStation Group is to research and exploration of projects in different places to determine the effectiveness of introducing the programme into Iran. One area were this group has had impact is the introduction of thermal pumps in Tabriz. The

An important purpose of the geothermal energy office is the construction of a geothermal Power Station with the nominal capacity of 100 MW in the Meshkinshahr region. Developing the application of geothermal energy, in non- PowerStation form in appropriate regions of Iran is also one of the strategic preferences of this office in better utilising this sleeping force inside the Earth.

Developing Wind Energy

According to archaeological evidence regions of Iran with the capacity to develop wind power have been designing and constructing windmills since 200 BC. Nowadays more modern approaches are taken to develop and utilise wind turbines. In Iran at present wind energy is pursued by the following projects:

 Continuing the establishment of 100 Megawatt wind station of Manjil (The plan of developing the wind stations).

 Establishing the 60 Megawatt wind station of Manjil.

 Continuing the establishment of 30 Megawatt station of Binalud.

 Preparing the wind atlas of Iran and locating the proper regions.

 Mounting 47 units of wind measurement stations of 10 – 30 and 40 meters in all over the country.

 Giving capacity by supporting the designs and constructing the wind turbines with the capacity more than 1.5 Megawatts.
