Retiring from Teaching?
Just because you’re retiring from teaching, you don’t have to retire from the NUT.
Retired teachers still make a contribution by, for example, assisting with local campaigns, going to meetings and helping recruit new members.
What’s on offer? Retired members continue to receive The Teacher, and can:
• attend meetings of their local NUT association
• participate in their retired members’ section
• vote in local and national NUT elections
• stand for election to the union’s retired teachers’ advisory committee.

Retired membership costs only £6.37 for 2011 (including a contribution to the NUT political fund, which you can opt out of). A local association fee may also be payable. How do I remain a member?
Ring the helpdesk on 0845 300 1666, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and explain that you are retiring soon. It’s easy to amend your direct debit to the retired teacher rate.
Which NUT local association will I belong to?
You will be assigned to the association linked to your last place of work, or you may choose a different association (eg where you live), subject to acceptance.
Caution! Retired membership does not give you legal and professional cover. If you intend to teach after retirement you’ll need to sign up to supply or part-time membership instead.

Ian Morgan
The NUT was saddened to learn of the death on 31 May, aged 78, of Ian Morgan. Ian was NUT president in 1987 and was an NUT executive member from 1974 to 1988.
Born in Monmouthshire, he attended Bassaleg County Secondary School before studying English and theology at St John’s College, Cambridge. He spent his working life teaching at Preston Grammar in Lancashire, which became a sixth-form, then tertiary, college.
He was a successful setter of crossword puzzles – under the name Serendip for the The Teacher and as Rover for The Guardian.
