Help for first time home buyers No deposit? No problem!
The government’s Homebuy scheme helps first-time buyers by providing an equity loan of up to 30 per cent of the price of a new property. Now Teachers Building Society, the only building society endorsed by the NUT, can provide eligible applicants with a mortgage for 70 per cent – meaning young teacher buyers need not put down a deposit at all!
The scheme is open to those with a household income of up to £60,000 buying a new-build property from a participating developer. Loans of up to 30 per cent are funded jointly by the developer and the government, with no interest payable for the first five years.
HomeBuy Direct buyers own 100 per cent of their home and can sell it on the open market without restriction. Get details from Teachers Building Society on 0800 378 669 or go to
www.homesandcommunities.co.uk/homebuy_direct.
Reading for pleasure
The NUT is campaigning for a rich curriculum that encourages extensive reading of whole books for pleasure. We know many NUT members are already doing fantastic work in this area and want you to get involved.
We would like you to let us know your ideas or strategies for promoting reading for pleasure. Please email brief information to
k.robinson@
nut.org.uk.
We need examples from all key stages and types of school, including special schools, PRUs or short stay schools and early years settings.
We plan to include members’ work in an NUT publication for teachers on reading for pleasure next year.
Protecting you, protecting children
‘Street to School’ is an international programme run by Aviva, the NUT’s recommended insurance provider. It supports projects caring for children living on the street in the UK and round the world in partnership with leading charities and experts.
Until the end of August Aviva is giving Railway Children, a charity working with runaways and children living on the streets in the UK, 5 per cent of the premium of every new home or car insurance policy taken out by NUT members.
