A month after making tennis
history at Wimbledon, Amer- ican John Isner will return to Washington this summer to compete in his fourth Legg Ma- son Tennis Classic. Isner, ranked 19th in the world, beat Nicolas Mahut in an 11-hour 5-minute marathon played over three days at the All England club, ending at 70-68 in the fifth set to easily become the longest match in tennis his- tory. As a wild card in the 2007 Legg Mason Tennis Classic, Isn- er set an ATP record of five third-set tiebreak matches en route to the final.
Organizers of the annual hard-court tournament are ex- pected to announce the final list of player commitments Monday. Isner, 25, is set to join top-ranked American Andy Roddick, a three-time Legg Ma- son champion (he won in 2001, 2005 and against Isner in 2007), as well as world No. 6 Robin Soderling, a two-time French Open finalist. international and American players, among them 2004 Legg Mason champion and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, who defeated Roger Federer in the Halle final earlier this month; Australian Open semifi- nalist Marin Cilic; and Amer- ican Sam Querrey, ranked 21st in the world and the only player other than Rafael Nadal with three or more ATP World Tour titles in 2010. Roddick has two and Soderling has one.
Other notable names in sin- gles include French Open semi- finalist Tomas Berdych and Americans Mardy Fish and Robby Ginepri. In April, tournament organ- izers announced that Roddick, a Washington fan favorite and winner of 29 singles titles, would return to compete for a fourth Legg Mason title. It was a coup for the tournament, which raised its profile signifi- cantly in 2009 in being desig- nated one of the ATP World Tour 500 events and doubling its prize money to $1.4 million. The Legg Mason Tennis Clas- sic will be played July 31-Aug. 8 at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park.
