Saigon on Fifth, (619) 220-8828 7-31-10

Voted best Vietnamese food in San Diego by numerous publications, Saigon on Fifth offers fresh, flavorful cuisine in a relaxing, exotic setting. Start with our no-oil, low-carb spring rolls prepared with your choice of lean sliced pork, shredded white chicken or vegetables. Continue on your lus- cious journey with our 360-Degree Beef, cubed filet mignon sauced in black pepper and garlic, or the Saigon Love Boat, a seafood combination infused with lemon leaf and herbs and wrapped in a banana leaf. And don’t forget our lunch specials!

El Fandango, (619) 298-2860 Located in Old Town State Historic Park, El Fandango is

a great tasting, turn-of-the-century Mexican restaurant with frothing margaritas and mojitos. Start your meal with Super Nachos, tortilla chips smothered in jack cheese and frijoles, served with sour cream and salsa. Or try the Albondigas, a tra- ditional Mexican soup made with fresh vegetables and meat- balls. El Fandango’s Chicken in Mole is a favorite – chicken breast covered in traditional three-chili sauce with chocolate and peanuts and garnished with sesame seeds. El Fandango is a culinary paradise for the romantic, adventurous gourmet.

Taste of Thai, (619) 291-7525

Taste of Thai was the first Thai restaurant in town to offer vegetarian options, and to give customers their choice of meat, said owner Val Haabestad. Every meal is prepared to or- der by the large kitchen staff, using only the freshest ingredi- ents. Haabestad said she has too many favorites on the menu to pick just one, but recommends the spicy noodles or Thai curry with a choice of beef, pork, chicken or shrimp. Taste of Thai is always worth visiting at one of its two locations, either in Del Mar or at 527 University Ave. in Hillcrest.

Taste of Italy, (619) 688-0333 In October 1995 Diah and Jennifer Asker started their

dream of owning and running a restaurant with the opening of Taste of Italy. Jennifer helped with the kitchen staff and pre- pared meals, while Diah took care of the front-of-the-house business. Fifteen years later the business was franchised out but is still being run by Diah’s cousin Johnny and his future wife. They started making their delicious tiramisu from a recipe given to them by a friend who had it passed down to her from her grandmother in Italy.

Hom, a distant uncle of Wing Tam, who took over in 1980 when Kip retired. The establishment achieved iconic status over the course of its 52-year tenure at its original locale. When Kip’s Cafe closed its doors in November 2008 due to an outrageous raise in rent, many San Diegans were left craving Kip’s unique blend of Chinese, Japanese and sushi culinary delights. Fast forward to 2010 and a new location at 3925 Fourth Ave. in Hillcrest, where you can feast your eyes on the beautiful décor inside the massive restaurant while you dine on the staples that made Kip’s Cafe in El Cajon an institution for five decades.
