OLD TOWN

The grand opening of the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park will be commemorated with a free public festival on July 10 featuring an open-air nighttime circus.

The daylong event will begin at 1 p.m. with live entertainment, including strolling actors and musicians on stage. Circus performers will be throughout the park during the day. Stagecoach rides, horse saddling and tacking lessons and other family-friendly activities will be offered.

At 4 p.m. a multi-

denominational blessing ceremony will be on the hotel steps with a Kumeyaay sage ceremony and blessings from religious institutions that were part of Old Town San Diego’s history.

The Zirk Ubu circus will take the stage at 8 p.m. in the center of the state park, with 19th century-inspired acts such as an aerial tissue dance, acrobatics, fire breathing, juggling and sword swallowing. “This festival is

commemorating the completion of a three-year, multimillion- dollar restoration,” said Joseph Melluso, operator of the Cosmopolitan. “We wanted to celebrate the hard work that everyone has put into this project with a festival that all of San Diego will enjoy. We hope everyone will come out and celebrate the Cosmopolitan’s return to glory.” Free parking will be available in the Caltrans parking lot on Taylor Street in Old Town for the event. For more information, go to oldtowncosmopolitan.com.
