Grassroots concert series draws top tier acoustic, folk talents

The first impression one gets looking at the outside of the Normal Heights United Methodist Church, across the street from Adams Elementary School, is that it looks like a run-of-the-mill Sunday gathering place, complete with a fellowship hall and a main church. But the Normal Heights United Methodist Church serves as a different type of gathering place for live music lovers year-round. The church hosts the Acoustic Music San Diego (AMSD) Concerts series, a labor of love Carey Driscoll started in 2003.
Driscoll, who originally moved to San Diego in 1965, launched AMSD Concerts because he was a fan of Jack Williams – a singer-songwriter with a 51-year career in music who’s played with John Lee Hooker, Big Joe Turner, Jerry Butler, Hank Ballard, and the Shirelles, to name a few. He wanted to see Williams perform, Driscoll said. “Starting with that show,
I had to learn the ins and out of booking artists as I went,” he said. “I applied my music knowledge and sales experience – whatever it took to the get the job done. What I did learn along the way is that this is not something easy to do as a one- man operation.”
Since the 250-seat AMSD
Concerts is a one-man operation with no ties to Ticketmaster or Clear Channel – the major promoters and ticket sellers for nearly all U.S. concerts – Driscoll gets the word out the old-fashioned way. He makes sure each concert is listed in the

Cindy Myhra, 57, who also
attends regularly, said what she loves most about the shows is that alcohol is not sold at AMSD

In the early days, some of the AMSD shows he managed were coups of a sort – they included original member of The Byrds Chris Hillman, John McEuen of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame, and Country Joe McDonald. But Driscoll also landed some household names, such as Judy Collins (who’s now performed twice for AMSD); Janis Ian, scheduled to perform September 3; and John Sebastian, who has shows booked for October 23 and 24. Maria Penny, 70, who lives
in Clairemont, is one of AMSD Concerts’ e-mail subscribers and regular attendees.
“I just love the venue,” Penny said. “The acoustics are great, and the variety of artists

“That way you don’t have some obnoxious jerk sitting next to you talking all night and yelling out, ‘Play Freebird,’” Myhra joked. “I’ve been to 82 (AMSD) concerts and it’s just one of the best, intimate settings in existence, or at least anywhere in San Diego in my opinion. You get to talk to the artist after the show, get
your picture taken with them – it’s just an all-around great experience.”
Charlie Mador, 62, who works for Scripps Mercy Hospital, says one of his favorite parts about AMSD Concerts isn’t the music. Carey’s wife, Ann, makes brownies and chocolate chip cookies that sell for 50 cents and “are gone by the end of the night,” Mador said.
“The brownies always go first, so I miss out, but honestly I don’t have one negative thing to say about my experiences seeing AMSD Concerts,” he said. “It’s a one-of-a-kind place in San Diego, especially in Uptown – one everyone should experience at least once.”u
Good things come to those who wait – unless of course you wait to get your game on! It’s officially bikini season and time to make a splash this summer in your fab designer swimsuit and strut your buff biceps, tight tummy and fabulous fanny! Oh, not quite ready for beach body show and tell? Then it’s time you get your derriere back into the gym and develop a real game plan. Living la vida loca on the treadmill, trying to shed those last few
pounds, is not the answer. It’s just going to wear you out and you’ll end up exhausted and over-training your body. You’ve got to pay attention to what you’re doing if your goal is to really look better and blast those last few bulges of fat. What you need is a plan to work out in the specific aerobic zone
your body needs to be in to burn fat. Training in your fat burning zone is the way you’re going to burn the most fat, but you can’t just take a shot in the dark and guess how hard you need to train to burn fat. Your specific training zone is not some imaginary place – it resides within you, and the approach to finding it is scientific. Welcome to weird science! This is where VO2 testing comes in.

VO2 simply stands for “volume of oxygen” and the test measures the volume of oxygen your body consumes at various intensity levels. The harder you work, the more oxygen your body needs to metabolize the energy needed to perform the work. This test can determine how many calories your body is burning at each intensity level and which fuel source it is using. Here’s how it works: You wear a heart rate monitor and a specially designed neoprene mask (reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter) that are connected to a special computer. You walk or run on a treadmill for about 15 minutes and as your effort increases the test indicates at what heart rate your body is burning fat, when it changes to carbohydrate (glycogen) burning and at what point your body becomes anaerobic. The VO2 test measures your energy system fuel sources and is the most accurate way to find your personal fat burning zone. This way you’ll know exactly how hard and at what heart rate you need to work out to melt the fat off your swimsuit-starved body. For example, when I took my test, the results showed that I burn the most fat up until my heart rate reaches 149 beats per minute. After that, I begin burning more carbohydrates than fat until I reach my max output, which is around 170 beats per minute. Then, I stop! Once you know your numbers, it’s best to wear a heart rate monitor
when you work out to keep track of your intensity and get the most accurate reading. By monitoring your heart rate each time you workout, you’ll know you’re training at the right intensity for the right amount of time. It’s all about the science of fat burning and taking the guesswork
out of cardio work. You can make the most of your time by knowing exactly how hard and long you should be exercising, and the less time it takes you to blast fat, the more time you have for important things, like standing in front of your mirror!
