People have different ideas about when summer begins - in the Republic of Ireland the official date is May 1, which seems slightly optimistic. For me, summer begins when the covers are removed from Britain’s grass tennis courts in the build up to the Wimbledon Championships.
Grass court tennis is quintessential to the British summer, but to the trade, tennis is no good to anyone unless the sunshine arrives with it, to light up the fires of the racket-swinging spirit among so many Britons.
In the build-up to Wimbledon, Prince gave me the opportunity to interview Maria Sharapova for ActivInstinct magazine, and it is worth re-iterating the advice she offered for amateur tennis players in the market for a new racket: “The key to selecting a great racket is spending some quality time with the racket. New technical offerings sometimes take getting used to, so one or two hits may not give you a true sense. Play points, serve, return and don’t make your decision after only one or two shots.”
Sage advice, but hard to live up to on the shop floor. Sharapova’s advice acts as a reminder to retailers to forge relationships with local sports clubs – not only tennis clubs of course – as a great way of increasing sales and enhancing marketing in one fell swoop.
