EIGHT years after taking up the challenge to become a GlobalScot, Andrew Lloyd is clearly as motivated as ever in encouraging Scottish businesses to reach for the top. He has given scores of aspiring companies the benefit of his experience – and the recipients have been just as eager to listen and act on his advice. This was clear on one of his most recent exercises, the GlobalScot speed networking event held recently in Edinburgh. “I spoke to 14 different organisations that night, having never met any of them before,” he says. “But I must have said something interesting because 13 of them wanted to get back in touch with me.” Andrew’s business interests take him

around the world, to such an extent that he reckons that each month he spends around one-and-a-half to two weeks in Scotland. The rest of the time he’s elsewhere in the UK or off to Italy, perhaps France or the USA. This month he spent a week in India. In between he manages to find time, usually a day a month, to meet and advise other businesses. Sometimes he’ll spend

half a day with a company, on other occasions it’s a quick word or two of guidance, but sometimes it can lead to somewhat lengthier dealings. He says: “My involvement extends from about four minutes – in the case of speed networking – to four years on the board. Some come and go, but there are others I have stayed in touch with for four or five years.” Andrew’s motivation, he insists, stems

from a desire to “give something back” – and he urges other GlobalScots to do all they can to spread their expertise. “We have a very eclectic mix of

GlobalScots,” he observes, “and I would urge all of them to meet the challenge that faces us. What you can give back as a networker really matters and I think we all as GlobalScots should ask ourselves whether we are prepared to give something back to improve the economic wellbeing of Scotland plc. If I can in some small way help a small company, then I will gladly find that one day a month.”
