Cook approves of Alpha 6

Ultra-sport record-breaker Nik Cook has praised Silva’s ALPHA 6 headlamp during the gruelling 6633 Extreme Winter Ultra Marathon 2010, during which he set a new course record. The race covers 120 miles at the Arctic Circle, in minus-35 degrees and 90mph winds – and his Alpha 6 passed the test with flying colours. www.silva.se

WALK magazine awards

Bridgedale has won its sixth consecutive Walk Magazine reader award in the best sock category. The socks are distributed by Burton McCall in the UK.

Scarpa also picked up a Gold award, for Best Walking Boot/Shoe, and they can be found with The Mountain Boot Company in the UK. Páramo were big winners on the night too, with a Gold award in three categories and a further two Bronze awards. The Golds comprised the prestigious Best Overall Walking Brand, Best Waterproof Jacket, and Best Walking Trousers. The Bronze awards were for Best Mid-Layer and Best Base Layer.

New site for Leatherman

Leatherman, the world’s leading name in multi- tools, has a new dedicated UK website with all the products shown on the site being distributed by Whitby & Co. The site also has a store finder which lists all the stores in the UK stocking Leatherman. See www.leatherman.co.uk for more.

The 2010 Whitby & Co catalogue has also just been released; new additions include Wenger Outdoor, Otter Box and Sunwise Sunglasses.

Montane raises £9k for Mountain Rescue

An amazing £9,000 was raised at the recent Outdoor Show by Montane for Mountain Rescue through sales of their Special Edition range of garments. The brand was able to donate around 50 per cent of the sale price to the charity, thanks to donations by ingredient brands Pertex, Polartec, PrimaLoft and Entrant DT. The products are also available from the Montane web site at www.montane.co.uk

Binnendijk joins OIA Board

Martin Binnendijk, chief executive officer of Hi- Tec, has been co-opted onto the Board of the Outdoor Industries Association. During the same meeting at which Martin was co-opted, Mark Held stepped down from his role as a director of the OIA Board to concentrate on developing the European Outdoor Group. Mark will continue to be actively involved in the OIA’s lobbying working group.

Tech training with Lyon

In mid-March Lyon Equipment ran its renowned staff training Workshop at Plas y Brenin in North Wales. Nearly 100 retail staff from specialist outdoor shops across the country converged on the National Mountain Centre for two intensive two-day courses days aimed at building general knowledge about outdoor gear, and specifically brands distributed by Lyon Equipment – Petzl and Petzl Charlet, Beal, Exped, Julbo, Jetboil and La Sportiva.

Those attending the course learned about climbing and mountain boot construction, snow and ice

hardware, hands-free lighting, performance eyewear, rope construction, gear testing and PPE, and much more.

KORS announces 2010 exhibitors

KORS, the Kendal Outdoor Retail Show has announced the exhibitors at its 2010 show, featuring a comprehensive list of quality distributors and brands. New exhibitors this year are Life Marque, Beyond Hope and Sidas.

The show will be held at Kendal Leisure Centre on 10–12 August 2010, with its businesslike approach and no-pressure format allowing buyers to spend quality time with people and products. The latest addition of a tent show featuring designs from the leading brands has further increased the show’s appeal.

MBC adds new brand to portfolio

The Mountain Boot Company has entered into an exciting partnership with internationally respected Italian brand Ski Trab.

Ski Trab has developed a global reputation as a leader in lightweight ski touring and freeride skis. Steve Roberts of MBC commented on the partnership: “This winter has seen massive growth in sales, distribution and consumer interest in back country product, Trab provides another opportunity to provide our customers with yet another best in class brand, and the interest for AW10/11 has already way exceeded our expectations.”

Oase defends design rights

Oase Outdoors ApS, owner of the Outwell camping brand, is celebrating a successful outcome of its litigation against tent brand Kampa relating to infringement of Oase Outdoors (Outwell)’s design rights of its Montana 6 tent.

Kampa has acknowledged that it has infringed Oase Outdoors (Outwell) design rights and that it was wrong to have brought to market a copy of the Outwell Montana 6 tent and has agreed not to copy the design in the future.

Satisfactory compensation has been paid to Outwell.
