Unknown number of casinos in Costa Rica

A report from the Finance Sub commission entrusted with the study of Gaming Regulations Law No. 17551 for betting and casinos in Costa Rica, has expressed uncertainty at the number of companies operating gambling business, especially online, in the country.

Se ignora total de casinos en Costa Rica

Un informe de la Subcomisión de Asuntos Hacendarios en

Costa Rica ha expresado que existe un desconocimiento total del número de empresas operando negocios de juegos de azar online en el país. Ante esta situación, los diputados de la respectiva Comisión Permanente, ha manifestado seguir estudiando el informe presentado por la subcomisión para tomar una decisión respecto de esta iniciativa.

El expediente 17551 de la Ley de Regulación de Apuestas a

casinos y juegos de azar establece un impuesto del 2 % a los casinos con el propósito de aumentar los recursos destinados a la seguridad ciudadana y al combate de la delincuencia. Además, mediante el proyecto de Ley, el Ejecutivo busca regular la actividad de casinos, apuestas y juegos de azar realizados en centros autorizados, físicos y virtuales.

La diputada Patricia Quirós dijo que el proyecto aporta

aspectos importantes en cuanto a la recopilación de información para conocer cuáles son las empresas que se dedican a las apuestas y la seguridad del monto que pueda generar la actividad en Costa Rica. El objetivo es identificar el número de total de empresas que se dedican a los juegos de azar, especialmente del rubro online y que estas empresas estén obligadas a instalar sus servidores en el país.

Fischer y Citi estudian proyectos de casinos en Perú

Claudio Fischer, presidente del directorio de Dreams, la empresa chilena operadora de casinos, dijo que el cambio a la

In view of this, representatives in the Finance Permanent Commission have ensured to carry on with the study of the legislation proposals in the parliamentary session set for Wednesday 20, where a decision on this matter is anticipated. The Gaming Regulations project has set a 2% tax on all casinos and betting companies to generate revenue to be used in public security and to combat crime.

Additionally, through the new Law, the Government seeks to

regulate the gaming sector including casinos, betting and online gambling in all its forms in duly licensed businesses.

Representative Patricia Quiroz said that the gaming law

project is set to control the companies that operate gambling businesses in Costa Rica to ensure that there is a projection on the revenue generated through the tax. Quiroz also said that once the online companies have been identified as operating from Costa Rica, they should be forced to install their servers in the country.

Fischer and Citi look at Peru casinos

Claudio Fischer, president of Dreams, Chile’s second largest

casino operators, said that changes in gaming legislation in Peru in 2009, has improved conditions for his company to invest in the country. Dreams, is owned by Chile’s Fischer Group (58.24%) and Citibank’s Chile investment arm, Citi Venture Capital (41.76%).

Fischer said: “We are studying proposals made by some

Peruvian operators and may eventually invest in a casino operation there, or operate slots, but we haven’t made a decision, yet”. Fischer Group has already made investments in Peru and operates a slots rental business in the country through Advance Gaming.

Bill to limit slot machines to casinos

A bill has been introduced in the Dominican Republic

Congress that would prohibit slot machines outside casinos.
