eanne Allison, Karsten Heuer and their son Zev are without a doubt this year’s first family of Canadian adventure.
For the Canmore, Alberta, family, the last
year has been a whirlwind of film festivals, awards and accolades surrounding their latest video project, Finding Farley, which documents the family’s five-month, cross-Canada journey from their home to the Maritime doorstep of one of Canada’s most well-known authors, Farley Mowat. This film does an exceptional job of docu-
menting the expedition, but also getting at the heart of family canoe tripping. “We get
notes every day from people, mostly families, who are inspired to get back in nature and outside. We’re pleased, of course, as is Far- ley,” said Heuer. Now, with multiple major awards under
their belts, including top prize at the 2009 Banff Mountain Film Festival and Best Ad- venture Travel Paddling Film at the 2010 Reel Paddling Film Festival, the family is taking some well-earned time off the trail. Karsten is in his backyard writer’s shack, working on a literary exploration of the
experiences of a family on a cross-country pilgrimage. Leanne is, among other things, document-
ing the life of Bear 71, a famous grizzly sow who happily raised multiple families in and around the town of Banff before meeting her untimely end on the busy trans-Canada highway. And five-year-old Zev is currently planning
his next canoe trip and wondering why, in- stead of driving, the family can’t just paddle to Calgary when they need to make the 100- kilometre journey. —Dave Quinn
