Fido’s First Aid Kit
Dogs love the backcountry—it’s a perfect setting for sniffing, chasing and getting into all sorts of trouble, so it’s important to bring a well- stocked canine first aid kit.
According to veterinarians and animal experts, here’s what you should include:
Vet’s and the nearest animal clinic’s phone numbers and addresses
Dog first aid manual, such as Ruff Wear’s Pet First Aid, Quick Guide to Animal Emergencies
Muzzle, to restrain an injured dog from biting
Latex gloves Triangular bandages SAM splint Gauze
Sock to keep an injured paw covered
2-inch vet wrap, a stretchy bandage for wrapping wounds 1-inch medical tape Blunt-tipped scissors Pliers or tweezers Rectal thermometer
K-Y Jelly to lubricate thermometer Antibiotic ointment Hydrogen peroxide
Iodine for cleaning minor wounds
Styptic powder to stop bleeding from minor cuts and broken nails
Toothpaste for de-skunking Ear and eye wash
Rehydration salts, such as Rehydrate’s Electrolyte Sports Drink for Dogs
Ask your vet about what types of antihistamines, antibiotics and anti-diarrheal medications you should bring along, as well as appropriate dosages —Stephanie Park
