Wild About Watercolours I
BY KATHLEEN WILKER
f your family travels light on camping trips, remind them that dehydration is not just for yummy snacks and meals. While moms and dads cook up dehydrated chili, kids can munch on dehydrated apples and bananas and get creative with paint—dehydrated paint. Bring along a palette of dehydrated, non-
toxic watercolour paint and a paint brush on your next trip. It’s a perfect way to have fun in the canoe or campground. You can paint on paper or on a wild canvas such as driftwood, tree fungi or fallen birchbark. If you’re looking for a washable surface to paint, use a paddle, special rock or even a family member’s leg. The possibilities are endless.
Materials: n Dehydrated non-toxic watercolour paints.
n A variety of paint brushes. Real brushes as well as natural brushes, such as pine needles, sticks, moss and leaves.
n A canvas such as paper, paddles, rocks, driftwood, fallen birchbark or tree fungi.
n Plastic cup or water bottle for cleaning brushes and mixing paint.
n Cloth and biodegradable soap for cleaning.
Directions: 1» Fill a plastic cup or bowl with water. This will be used for cleaning brushes and mixing paint.
2» Dip the brush into the water and mix it into the dehydrated watercolour paint.
3» Paint what you see around you on your canvas, like the sunset, a frog, a pine tree or your tent. Or paint something abstract.
4» Experiment with watery paint and thicker paint.
5» Try using natural brushes such as sticks or pine needles.
6» Add sand to your paint and see what happens.

7» Mix different paint colours together. Stir yellow and red paint together. How do you make sky blue?
8» If you don’t like what you’ve painted, or you’re ready to paint something else, just
wash the canvas on shore, as you would your camping dishes. Let it dry and repeat.
9» When supper’s ready or you hit the next portage, amaze your family with your beautiful creations.
