THE REALITY:The Tories Aren’t so Clean Themselves

While attempting to take the moral high ground, the Tories have been plagued by revelations over their own party. In March 2010, Lord Ashcroft, the party’s Deputy Chairman and a peer in the House of Lords, revealed that he was a non-dom. When the media raised concerns about the Tory donor’s tax-status Cameron dismissed the public’s right to this information.

FACTFILE:

Name: Right Honourable Lord Michael Ashcroft Occupation: Businessman and politician Tax-status: Non-domicile

In 2000, Lord Ashcroft received his peerage under the condition that he become a full UK taxpayer. Lord Ashcroft is a billionaire who pays no tax in Belize (a third-world country), and his non-dom status in the UK means that he hardly pays tax here either. Meanwhile he sits in the House of Lords and makes decisions about the lives of UK citizens.
