Rational SelfCooking Center®

Great food and great savings for school, college and university caterers

R

ational’s multi-award-winning SelfCooking Center is ideal for education catering as it is designed to save energy, cut running costs

and to have minimal impact on the environment. The SelfCooking Control monitors and optimises the cooking process every second of the cooking time. This not only produces perfect results, it also uses only just as much power as is needed to cook the food – which means it saves 60% of energy compared to traditional cooking equipment. Thanks to market-leading

technology, including smart fan controls, it also saves 15% of energy compared to traditional combi–steamers. In 2008 Rational set a new

benchmark in ‘green’ foodservice technology with the launch of CareControl. Now built into all Rational SelfCooking Centers, CareControl slashes running costs, saves space and helps protect the environment. It also has lower running costs, saves space, protects the environment and has a two year warranty. Rational SelfCooking Centers are

available with preferential discount from Buying Solutions under framework number A1626669A.

Launch of Northumberland’s School Food Strategy

R

obin Casson, the Council’s Director of

Learning, Skills and Family Support, said: “Research tells us that there should be clear links between school food and the whole curriculum and that healthy children make happy children.” Rachel Morgan, Assistant

Head Teacher at Meadowdale Middle School in Bedlington, Rachel said: “We involved parents and carers in this pilot. We invited them to come along to the school and have a meal with their children so that they can see for themselves what meals they’re having. “We are now launching the “Fuel to go” colour coding scheme of red,

amber and green, which makes it easier for children to make the right choice at mealtimes.” School Food Trust chief executive Judy Hargadon said: “We were very

impressed by Cambo First School’s achievements and are delighted to award them the £5,000 prize to help them improve their lunch times even further. “The award is part of our Million Meals campaign, which aims to improve

the health and well-being of children by getting a million more pupils eating school meals. We invite all schools to sign up on our website to Million Meals and apply for School of the Month for a chance to win this cash prize.”

Versatility is key to sauce success in schools

U

ncle Ben's® and Dolmio® foodservices sauces have recently been put to the test in real school

kitchens. Addressing the need to provide interesting, wholesome meals that pupils will choose and enjoy, the company has created literally hundreds of dishes using their sauces, from main meals to snacks, and including a wide range of vegetarian options, all especially designed for school catering. Innovative school chef Tim Fletcher was asked to

help develop the initiative: "I hadn't worked with the Uncle Ben's® and Dolmio® foodservices sauces before" explains Tim, "but I quickly realised how versatile they are. By basing my development on the flavours of the sauces, I was able to create an enormous number of excellent dishes, many of which schools want to include on their menus." All of this information has been collected into a new 'School Menu

Inspiration Pack' which includes a DVD of Tim demonstrating some of the dishes, practical hints and tips and hundreds of ideas for dishes. Helping caterers to meet the Food School Trust nutrient based standards is

equally important: all the Uncle Ben's® and Dolmio® foodservices sauces are within the 2010 FSA salt guidelines, and many are already within the 2012 targets. The company is now offering kitchen workshops to interested school

caterers, so that menu planners and staff can judge the sauces for themselves. The first workshop, at a school which had not previously used the sauces, was a great success, according to Alan Palmer, Head Chef at Welland Park College in Market Harborough: "We had a great day, and put lots of Tim's ideas onto a special menu, which was highly popular with the pupils. I'll be using them again."
