Modern methods of construction for education buildings

Why do schools continue to use traditional building methods when modern methods of construction can make life so much easier?

P

remier Interlink is a market leader in the design, manufacture and installation of

buildings using modern methods of construction. With over six decades of experience in off-site construction, they provide buildings in education, healthcare, commercial, custodial and construction, for hire or sale. The new generation of steel framed, off-

site constructed modular buildings have come a long way from the timber-framed temporary buildings many people still associate with this construction method. Premier Interlink’s PremierPlus and PremierOne modular buildings meet all current relevant building legislation, and in many cases far exceed required standards. This guiding principle of excellence and quality has also been applied to reducing a modular building’s impact on the environment. Off-site construction uses innovative building methods that are safer, cleaner and more efficient, minimising disruption, guaranteeing quality, assuring costs, and saving time.

Schools, colleges and universities benefit from the buildings provided utilising innovative techniques, from a small single- storey classroom, to an individually designed, multi-storey, multi-purpose education building. Manufactured off-site, disruption and traffic on site is reduced, offering improved safety, lower costs and shorter completion time. Manufacturing in a controlled factory environment ensures accuracy and consistent quality during construction, producing a better finished product.

Quick

Whilst the site is prepared, manufacture of the new education building commences off- site. Following lean manufacturing methods in factories with state of the art equipment for cutting, lifting and drilling, the building passes quickly and easily through the various stages of construction unaffected by weather conditions. The new building is delivered to site 75-90% complete. The building arrives complete with internal fixtures and fittings such as doors, windows, flooring and electrical components. Wiring and plumbing are also included, and all requirements for connection of services. Time on site is rapid - a typical 140m2 double classroom takes 4 weeks to complete on site. Occupied schools continue to function with minimum disruption.

Environmental Advantages

Manufacturing under factory conditions allows for efficient use of materials. Site waste is minimised as most waste has already been disposed of in a safe, environmentally friendly way. Most materials are recycled or reused. This type of building system is inherently more economical and easily maintained through its life and is often the preferred choice for a sustainable solution.

By utilising innovative methods of

construction it’s easy to incorporate environmentally friendly options within buildings, such as solar or wind power, recycled rainwater, and low energy lighting/cooling solutions for a lower carbon footprint. Buildings can be designed to assist clients in obtaining BREEAM Excellent. Recently, Premier Interlink, working in conjunction with a major contractor in a different market sector, won a prestigious 2010 BREEAM award for its standard PremierPlus.

Benefits

PremierPlus and PremierOne offer excellent acoustic performance. They exceed building regulations for thermal efficiency, radically reducing energy requirements and costs. DfES Building Bulletins are fully complied with. A full range of external colours and

finishes are available, such as brick finishes for a more ‘traditional’ look, or glass walling for added light and space. The end result is a smart, modern, flexible and comfortable education environment. These permanent buildings, unlike a

conventional building, can be easily moved, extended or modified rapidly. It’s clear to see why modern methods of

construction are fast becoming the preferred solution for education buildings requiring an efficient, modern facility that can be occupied quickly yet still be flexible enough to suit the needs of the school, now and in the future.
