doors to an eagerly awaiting crowd. “It was a big decision – but despite the recession I really felt that the time was right to branch out into London. I knew location was key, so I held out until something became available on Westbourne Grove.” The decision certainly paid off – the Westbourne Grove store has seen no

hint of a downturn, with the annual sales target far exceeded during the first six months of trading. The debut launch of the Autumn/Winter-10/11 collection at London Fashion Week is also evidence of the UK expansion. But financial gain wasn’t the main motivation here. “I wanted to bring the Fiorentini + Baker philosophy to the UK and make

the entire collection available for the first time. Having the shop really provided the opportunity to set the tone and give people an insight to what we’re all about.” It’s Baker’s laid back character and dedication to the company, which has

no doubt been instrumental in its success. You only need to take one look at the designer to see that she knows about style – but despite such a natural skill for fashion Baker has been known to protest the value of it.

“I don’t follow trends, or necessarily forecast what will be in over the

coming seasons – I strongly believe that good, simple design, combined with quality materials and skilled craftsmanship can stand the test of time and allows people to create their own style and individuality.” This said Baker’s natural ability to hit the current trends is evident in each

collection. The current S/S collection includes clogs, shoe boots and casual flat sandals. The buckle boots, which have become a staple in every collection since the outset, are instantly recognisable and have been adopted by most of Hollywood’s A-listers, with Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Anniston as devoted fans. Deborah, still lives in Bologna with her beautiful daughter Alyssa, but

splits her time between Italy and London. Despite the growing worldwide popularity of Fiorentini + Baker, she has held on to her original philosophy – make shoes, have a good time - and that is exactly what she does.

Deborah Baker Trend Forecast A/W 2010

The bright, vibrant colours and natural materials, like wood, cork and vegetable tanned leathers, seen throughout the current Spring/Summer 10 will transcend naturally into the forthcoming Autumn/Winter season. Metallic gold and silver leathers break away from the more demure shades of tan and brown as featured heavily previously. Hues of deep purple and sage green will compliment the more lavish metallic tones. Buckles feature profoundly, this has been a staple feature in my collections for years, but I have noticed there is a real following of this trend developing on the footwear fashion scene and I feel it is here to stay for a while. But my biggest forecast for the forthcoming season is good quality boots, with simple, classic and enduring design that look even better the more wear and tear they get!’
