scolded, “You should say, ‘I’ve had sufficient.’ ” “But I didn’t,” replied Jason. “I had spaghetti.” “Nevertheless,” my
aunt insisted, “the polite way is, ‘I’ve had sufficient.’ ” The waiter came up
to take our dessert order. When it came to Jason’s turn, he very politely replied, “Oh, no, thank you. I’ve had so much sufficient, I’m stuffed.”

I WENT INTO A LOCAL JUNK SHOP
with my family and found that the owner was nowhere to be seen. We began mooching about and
I spotted a pair of old-fashioned spectacles near the till. I tried them on and announced, “I’ve been looking for a pair like these for my prescription lenses. What do you think?” As my family muttered and nodded their approval,
the shopkeeper appeared. “Do you have any other old frames like this?”
I asked him. “Give me my glasses back and I’ll have a look,”
