most. It’s irrational and often unfair, but it can’t be ignored. It’s also a shame for Gordon Brown. “I once heard a studio audience commenting on a speech by the prime minister,” says Mellinger. “They said, ‘He doesn’t look the kind of guy you could have a beer with.’ Nobody mentioned the content!” Changing the way people feel about you can change the way they act, so don’t leave it to chance. Here’s how to make the impression you want.

1. Own your own space. Practise by stretching

out your arms and drawing a circle round your body to open out your chest and make you look positive. 2. Animate your face. You don’t have to smile but you do need to look alert and interested.

3. Focus on the moment. If you don’t, other

thoughts will crowd in. “Say to yourself, ‘Wherever I am, this is where I am,’ ” says Mellinger. 4. Engage your audience, even if it’s only one person. Think about what they want.

5. Video yourself or practise in a mirror.

Admittedly it’s like singing into your hairbrush, but it’s a great way to critique your act.

...see the point of Twitter

How to

BUSINESS DOES IT, POLITICIANS DO IT AND SO,

INCESSANTLY, DO CELEBS. They’re all on Twitter, the mini-blog craze that limits messages (tweets) to just 140 characters. But why? What started as a bit of fun is now an important way to

How to

...make real mint tea

For an authentic Moroccan brew, take a dozen sprigs of fresh mint, three teaspoons of green tea (or tea bags) and three tablespoons of sugar. Add to a warmed pot, cover with four cups of boiling water and brew for three minutes. Pour yourself a glass, but return the tea to the pot and then repeat the process (it dissolves the sugar). Now pour it for real, holding the pot high to create a froth. Garnish with extra mint and enjoy. Your digestion will thank you, though your figure may not.
