PAUL STEELMAN INTERVIEW

into Macau. Macau does not need or want Las Vegas.

CI: Are there cultural factors you have to absorb

when designing for a location outside the US?

PS: No doubt about it, we have to take into

consideration the culture. The whole idea of the Sands, the design, had to do with creating a stadium of gambling. It wasn’t about James Bond, the tuxedo, or the personal relationship with gambling that people like between the dealer and the gambler; really it was about that it is a sport there. The whole building was shaped around this cultural difference. Then there are planning things about taxis and

buses, and how you treat VIPs and everything like that; believe me, the cultural differences from district to district are extreme. In order for you to inject Las Vegas into it, it is

about designing Las Vegas within their culture, it is not about putting Las Vegas in their culture.

CI: Do you have a favourite casino property you

have not worked on?

PS: I really think that Roger Thomas and DeRuyter

Butler did a fabulous job on Encore; I think it’s a beautiful facility. Of course, all of Steve’s facilities, Encore, Wynn, Bellagio and Mirage, the one I worked

on with him, the design on all those facilities is not compromised. Not by budget, time, or accountancy, or by legal or any other thing; they always see their way clear to the top of the market. Of course, with gaming facilities there is no such

thing as a three-star casino. They are aspirational, and when a facility is aspirational… Wynn’s casinos are just as open to a three-star client as to a five-star client. He builds the highest possible standard, where other casinos will limit their standards. When they limit their standards, they don’t get the top end of the market.

“When they limit their standards, they don’t get the top end of the market.”

CI: They really are destination casinos, people

travel just to see them…

PS: I think they have an extra benefit – people

don’t go into them just to wander. A lot of casinos, people go in to wander; Steve Wynn’s casinos and Sheldon’s [Adelson], you go in and you spend money.
