Innovative PlayAlive
with Wicksteed
I
t’s not always easy to get children exercising but it is crucially important.
With statistics clearly showing that the school kids in England of today are
simply not as fit as their counterparts 10 years ago, it is time to improve on
both outdoor and indoor activities available to them. Fitness levels are
declining faster here than in other countries and this must not be allowed
to continue.
Indeed, cardio-respiratory fitness may be more important than the much
talked about BMI levels and with this in mind Wicksteed commissioned
specific research from the Centre for Sport and Exercise Research at
Staffordshire University.
They studied children aged 9-11 and test results revealed that those
playing on Wicksteed’s innovative, electronic PlayAlive equipment were
exercising mostly at between 60-80% of their age-related maximum heart
rate, which equates to moderate to vigorous physical activity.
Dr Jacky Forsyth, Senior Lecturer at the University commented,
“The physical activity recommendation for children is to accumulate at least
60 minutes of daily moderate to vigorous activity. So, play equipment that
encourages children to exercise regularly will be hugely beneficial to their
health and wellbeing.”
For more outdoor activity, the Fun n Fitness Agility Playscapes from
Wicksteed Playscapes have been designed to encourage physical
development in a fun, yet challenging, way. Produced from high quality
timber from sustainable sources these agility trails offer a natural, fitness
system which sit perfectly in school environments.
