February 2010
Like Disney, there will soon be two major
Legoland destinations in the United States, in exactly the same states:
Florida and California.
Merlin Entertainments is likely to make a go of the former Cypress
Gardens site, even though others have failed, thanks to the power of the
Legoland brand. Once those plastic building blocks arrive in Winter Haven,
Florida, tourists will be willing to make the one-hour journey from Central
Orlando in far greater numbers than they did before.
By buying the remains of an existing park, Merlin saves time and
money building the infrastructure, meaning it can have Legoland Florida
up an running as soon as 2011.
I must admit that once Land South Holdings, Cypress Gardens’
owners from 2008 to 2009, pulled the plug on the park last season I
never thought it would open again. As no purchase price has been
declared, it’s difficult to be sure how much these property speculators
profited from their brief dalliance with park ownership. Perhaps not as
much as you think.
