Mobile phones with solar cells to be launched by Sharp in China - Jan 29, 2010
Solar cell modules will be installed on to two mobile phone models
which Sharp intends to commercialise for the Chinese market. A mobile
telephone equipped with a solar cell module will be commercialised
for the Chinese market next month, it has been revealed by Sharp
Corporation.
The move represents the first solar-powered handset by Sharp for the
overseas market, following on the solar cell mobiles being launched in
the Japanese market last year. Its solar-powered devices will eventually
be extended to global markets in light of increasing demand for solar
charging capabilities for consumer electronics.
Sharp’s proprietary solar cell module will be included in the SH6230C,
which features a 2.9-inch liquid crystal display screen (LCD), while the two models being introduced to the Chinese
market will incorporate Memory LCD. Memory LCD has high visibility in daylight and consumes little power, allowing
email status and time to be displayed at all times. Sharp, STMicroelectronics and Enel Green Power recently
announced a joint venture for the production of thin-film solar cells, with Sharp providing technical assistance, as well
as utilising the solar cell technology.
