FRANÇOIS K on the start
of his love affair with
dance music…
“I remember very clearly in the late Spring, early
summer of 1977, I went to my friend’s club and he put on
this Casablanca record that I had never heard before.
Obviously Donna Summer had had a lot of albums before
but when we heard ‘I Feel Love’, we all fell on our faces.
“It was so incredibly futuristic and like nothing else I’d
ever heard. It had all these crazy synthesisers and it was
very danceable, powerful, simple, catchy. When ‘I Feel
Love’ was released I felt like this was a thunderous
moment. It really took things to another level. Up to
then, we were mostly hearing a lot of sweet strings and
very orchestrated productions, or very raw, funky or
jazzy grooves, but ‘I Feel Love’ was like a love shock.
There was nothing else like it. That’s why DJs still play
the record today. I don’t remember any other record
ever having that effect on me.”
